Top UK Universities 2010

The Times has published the rankings of top UK institutions (a total of 114 institutions are ranked). The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, commonly known as Oxbridge, are again the Top 2 universities in the nation. In the subject league tables, Cambridge is ranked Number One in 35 subjects, while Oxford leads in nine subjects.

The Top 10 universities remained largely unchanged, with the exception that York drops out of top 10 list this year. Exeter is now a Top 10 UK university - improving its position to 9th nationally.

Sheffield made it to Top 20 this year, moving up four places from 22nd. It is the biggest winner in the subject league table, with 27 subject areas appeared in the top ten list.

Some of the biggest climbers this year:
- Edinburgh (from 18th to 14th)
- Cumbria (from 99th to 83th)
- Hertfordshire (from 79th to 66th)
- Bedfordshire (from 89th to 71st)
- Lincoln (from 103rd to 86th)
- Teesside (from 88th to 81st)
- Northumbria (from 73rd to 64th)
- UWIC Cardiff (from 85th to 76th)

    According to the Independent Complete University Guide 2010, the Top 3 institutions remained the same position as last year's rankings, with Oxford in the first place, followed by Cambridge and Imperial.

    Institutions with improvements in the ranking position:

    - Durham moved into Top 5 this year (from 6th in the 2009 League Table).

    - Bath and York moved into Top 10 positions with 9th and 10th respectively.

    - Edinburgh jumped 10 places from 21st to 11th.

    - Southampton moved up to 13th from 20th last year.

    - Aston moved up to 13th from 23rd.

    - Sheffield moved up to 22nd from 26th.

    - Newcastle up 3 places to 24th.

    The Top 20 UK Universities are as follows:
