Doctors who go into management can find great jobs in hospital management and administration. There are big medical electronic companies like Philips or GE which would absorb MBA grads with a background of medicine. These companies develop products and services which can best be done by doctors. Besides, there is tremendous scope for clinical research. Doctors with management background can do a phenomenal job in terms of product development and management.

It is not necessary that you have to move away from your medical profession once you have a management degree. You can very well continue to practice. Infact, a doctor with managerial skills can provide the best treatment, which is cheapest for the patients. A MD/MBA integrated degree is very popular in the west. More and more students are showing interest in health-care management.

Considering the amount of money spent on becoming a doctor, it is necessary that you have the skills to earn as much (if not more) in as little time as possible; for which business knowledge is crucial. However good a doctor you may be, or however great your clinic is, you need patients to keep coming in and that requires planning and strategic overview of things. However, people in the medical community are not simply pursuing MBAs as a sort of one-stop shop for business education. There are also master's degrees in public health care and executive MBA programs for doctors.

Whatever said and done, a MBA degree will help you make money but not save a life, only clinical knowledge will help you do that. So, it is very essential that you practice as a doctor for not less then 5 years before you pursue a MBA degree.

You can find employment in hospitals and other healthcare organisations. The tasks would typically involve managing the staff, health services and containing the expenditure. While both medical and non-medical graduates can take up the course, medical graduates would be dealing more with the technical aspects of hospital administration.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Maharashtra offers Master of Hospital Administration. The eligibility criteria are graduation in any discipline with minimum 50 per cent marks and age not more than 45 years. The admission is based on entrance test, group discussion and personal interview. For details, visit tiss.edu

Manipal University, Manipal Institute of Management, Manipal offers MBA in Hospital Administration and Health Care Management. The eligibility criterion is graduation in any discipline with minimum 50 per cent marks. The admission is based on performance at Management Aptitude Test, group discussion and personal interview. For details, visit manipal.edu

You will have a tough time getting a non health services job after the MBA abroad esp if done in a non top 15er... It might be better to do an MBA here from IIM ABC if u can make it...
But do you know that a dentist makes a hell of a lot of money in the US! They are the top of the charts.... higher than GPs... etc... This MBA is super overrated trust me... The average Dentist out scores the avg MBA easily atleast in the US. Remember the americans eat all the junk in the world and are very particular of how they look, the dentist is set for life... gone fishing...

The MBA doesnt teach u how to do business, thats a skill that one can learn and is better learned on your own...
An MBA is just a standard design factory for entry into Consulting and Finance and is ofcourse a pickup joint for all kinds of jobs... You should go in if the above interest you. For Finance, the CFA in the US is also highly respected...

Unless done from a top 10-15 MBA school, it would be slightly more risky in your case... But u could find it easier to enter Health related jobs even after the normal MBA there... Ofcourse if you show raw smarts almost any job can be had in the US... So its your call...

An MBA program may offer you a "big picture" view of business, operations and leadership---the language, theory and principles. This is not necessarily going to be the "be all, end all" of business training, such that, voila: you're an experienced businessman. Far from it.

Perhaps it's equivalent to doing the first 2 years of Medical school, and getting the theory and vocabulary.

Conversely, an MBA may be overkill for most physicians.

Most importantly though, MBA programs don't necessarily help you in applying these principles to YOUR actual business and life.

If you decide to pursue an MBA, your options are many. First, the traditional 2-year program offered by most Universities will require a full time commitment. If you don't want to take two years away from your current work, most schools also offer an Executive MBA option, with classes in the evening, weekends, or through distance learning.
